Major
sporting events attract hundreds of thousands of spectators from across the
globe and can last between 12 and 16 days. This increase of visitors can
push the existing transport infrastructure of a host city to breaking point,
careful considered planning will minimise the impact on the existing
infrastructure.
Successful Transport Planning is an essential part of staging any major
sporting event. Effective transport plans should be sustainable and should
aim to minimise environmental impacts wherever possible.
Good transport plans will ensure a lasting legacy for the local community
with an increase in the transport network which will be of benefit for many
years after the sporting event has taken place.
2009 will see the publication of the second London 2012 transport plan,
which will see updated plans which will see the ODA is investing £500m in
infrastructure to develop and deliver transport facilities that are needed
before, during and beyond the 2012 Games.
